Earlier Report Observations

The market for cast iron tubes, pipes and hollow profiles in Russia expanded significantly in 2019, reaching 68 228 tons. This growth was driven by increased oil extraction and drilling activity, which boosted demand from the oil and gas sector. Regulatory changes from 2017 that restricted the use of second-hand pipes in construction also channeled demand toward new products. However, the market volume contracted to 54 712 tons in 2020 as new orders dwindled and demand for large-diameter pipes fell, a trend reinforced by the formal ban on used pipes in critical buildings.

After declining to 49 827 tons in 2021, the market surged to 72 225 tons in 2022. This rebound was fueled by robust demand from the oil and gas industry despite international sanctions, alongside a shift in order portfolios toward heavy-grade and large-diameter pipes. Production of cast iron pipes alone grew by 31.4% that year. The market then corrected in 2023 and 2024, falling to 51 805 tons and then 37 420 tons, as the market became oversupplied and oil production cuts under OPEC+ agreements reduced key industrial demand.
