This event likely constrained local availability, with the market size recorded at 6 080 t that year. Production showed resilience, however, and the market volume experienced only a slight decrease to 5 949 t in 2019.

The market contracted significantly from 2020 to 2021, falling to 3 823 t by 2021. Throughout this period, cassava production remained stable at approximately 7 000 t annually, while no specific local factors were reported to explain the pronounced reduction in domestic market volume.

A strong recovery emerged from 2022 onward, with the market size rising to 5 198 t and further to 6 523 t in 2023. This growth aligned with a broader economic revival supported by construction, remittances, and rebounding tourism, which also fostered agricultural output. In 2020, Tonga produced 7 082 tons of cassava, marking a 2.0% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 2.9%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 6 892 tons. That year also saw the largest drop in production, with a 5.5% decrease. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase, with production rising by 4.8%.

The data shows irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2018 at 812 tons and peaked in 2020 at 2 453 tons, creating a threefold difference between these years. Tonga's cassava export value has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports were valued at 521.2 thousand US dollars, a sharp rise of 58.5% from the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 17.4%, averaging an annual decline of 6.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 234.4 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 62.9%.
