Between 2018 and 2023, the market volume for yams in Tonga showed significant variation. Starting at 3 713 t in 2018, the volume available domestically fell to 2 185 t in 2020 before rising sharply to 4 510 t by 2023. This movement was closely tied to changes in export volumes, which ranged from a high of over 2 400 t to a low of under 200 t.

Domestic production of yams remained steady, hovering between 4 600 t and 4 700 t each year. Consequently, the shifts in market volume were predominantly determined by how much of the output was exported. Imports were minimal throughout the period and did not materially influence the overall supply.

The year 2023 saw the highest market volume of the period at 4 510 t, resulting from consistent local production coupled with very low export activity.

Tonga's yam production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 4 604 tonnes of yams, representing a 0.8% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 2.4%, with an average annual decline of 0.8%.

Following two years of decline, Tonga's yam production value increased in 2020. The output was valued at 5 241 thousand US dollars, marking an 8.5% rise compared to 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, production value decreased by 22.9%, with an average annual decline of 8.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 4 831 thousand US dollars, while the largest drop occurred in 2018 with an 18.2% decrease.

Exports yams from Tonga

Export volumes showed significant fluctuations during this period. The lowest point was in 2018 at 952 tonnes, while volumes peaked in 2020 at 2 421 tonnes - a 2.5-fold difference between these years. The 2020 figure represents a substantial 41.9% increase from 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 25.0% drop, while the most significant increase was recorded in 2019 at 79.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Australia and New Zealand continued to be the primary markets for Tonga's yam exports in volume terms, together representing 87.7% of total exports. Other trading partners accounted for the remaining share.

Tonga's yam export value has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 2 756 thousand US dollars, showing a sharp 55.2% year-over-year gain. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 50.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 14.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 135 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 38.0%. The most significant increase occurred in 2019 with a 56.5% rise.

During the 2017-2020 period, Australia and New Zealand dominated Tonga's yam exports in value terms, together accounting for 94.9% of total export value. The remaining exports were distributed among various other countries.
