Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the Thai cassava industry focused on strategic planning to strengthen exports to China, conducting studies on factors affecting trade volumes. The domestic market volume grew to 30 838 thousand tons in 2019, supported by increased production of 31 080 thousand tons and a sharp drop in exports. However, by 2020, market volume retreated to 28 930 thousand tons despite a rise in imports.

Market volume rebounded strongly in 2021, reaching 32 616 thousand tons, then stabilized near 32 000 thousand tons in 2022 before declining to 30 089 thousand tons in 2023. The value of the market followed a similar pattern, peaking at 7.9 billion USD in 2021.

Entering 2024, the sector faced multiple pressures. Drought linked to the El Niño phenomenon constrained cassava supply, while the spread of cassava mosaic disease posed a risk to yields. China, a key export destination, reduced its imports of Thai cassava due to high domestic grain stocks and competitive corn prices, with Thailand losing market share in China to Vietnam and Laos. The harvested area for cassava shrank as some farmers switched to lower-cost crops like sugarcane and corn.
