The cassava market volume in Laos showed a pronounced shift between 2018 and 2023. After beginning the period at 2.2 million tonnes, domestic consumption contracted significantly, falling to a low of 1.5 million tonnes in 2020.

A strong reversal followed from 2020 onwards, with the market volume entering a phase of rapid growth. By 2023, it had more than doubled from the 2020 level to reach 3.9 million tonnes. This expansion occurred alongside a sustained rise in national production, which increased from 2.3 million tonnes to 6.3 million tonnes over the same period, and a concurrent growth in export volumes.

Laos experienced a third consecutive year of growth in cassava production. In 2020, the country produced 3 091 thousand tonnes of cassava, an increase of 18.2% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 35.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 10.7%.

Exports cassava from Laos
