Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2021, the cassava market in Cameroon expanded steadily, driven primarily by a surge in export demand which grew by over 500% between 2017 and 2019. This external pull was supported by rising domestic consumption, despite recurring logistical challenges such as the isolation of production basins in the East and weather-related difficulties that periodically constrained supply and influenced local prices. The market volume grew from 5.7 million tonnes to nearly 5.9 million tonnes during this period, as lower cassava prices in some years, like the drop to $0.1 per kg in 2021, helped sustain consumption.
From 2022 onward, growth accelerated markedly, fueled by structural investments and policy initiatives aimed at import substitution. The emergence of new local SMEs in processing, under the 'Made in Cameroon' banner, began adding value to cassava. This was followed by the launch of the first industrial processing plant in Ngoulemakong in early 2024 and the announcement of several more, backed by the National Development Strategy 2020-2030. A key driver in 2024 was the adoption of a national quality standard for bread-making cassava flour and an agreement with millers and bakers to blend 4-5% cassava flour into bread, directly boosting demand for processed cassava. These developments, alongside growing regional demand and enhanced digital marketing networks, pushed the market volume above 6.4 million tonnes by 2023.
