The market volume for fresh carrots and turnips in Norway grew from 51 620 t in 2018 to a peak of 59 741 t in 2020, driven by state production subsidies and increasing consumer interest in local produce, including a trend toward purchasing "ugly" vegetables to reduce waste. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further boosted demand for fresh vegetables for home cooking, while simultaneously creating logistical challenges for imports.

After 2020, the market began to contract, falling to 48 182 t by 2023. In 2021, food security and preparedness measures likely constrained imports, leading to a sharp drop in inbound volumes. Then in 2022, the implementation of new EU organic production rules required producers to adapt, which temporarily affected domestic output. The decline continued into 2023.

Throughout the period, the Norwegian market was characterized by a high degree of self-sufficiency in carrots, supported by favorable growing climates and advanced long-term storage techniques. However, producers also faced challenges such as the spread of the pest kjølmark, for which no effective control measures exist.
