Production of carrots and turnips in Northern Africa varied over the 2018-2023 period, beginning at 1 442 thousand tonnes in 2018 and reaching 1 386 thousand tonnes in 2023. The domestic market size, calculated from production, imports, and exports, followed a similar trajectory, declining from 1 414 thousand tonnes to 1 318 thousand tonnes over these six years.

Exports from the region increased consistently, more than doubling from 28 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 72 thousand tonnes in 2023. This growth in outward shipments reduced the volume available for domestic consumption, while imports remained negligible at under 4 thousand tonnes annually, indicating a predominantly self-sufficient market.

The market saw two distinct downturns in 2019 and 2021, with production falling to 1 310 thousand tonnes and 1 287 thousand tonnes respectively. Recoveries occurred in 2020 and 2022, though the overall trend across the period was a moderate contraction in both output and market volume.

Looking at the broader trend from 2017 to 2020, production declined by 6.5%, averaging a 2.2% annual decrease. The peak was recorded in 2018 at 1,442 thousand tons, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2019 with a 9.2% decline.

The maximum value was 11,988 thousand US dollars in 2018, which also experienced the largest annual increase at 125.9%. The most substantial decline was in 2019, with a 19.4% drop.
