Earlier Report Observations

The market for not further prepared dried vegetables in Northern Africa experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After maintaining a volume around 40 000 t in 2018 and 2019, the domestic market contracted sharply to 26 510 t in 2020 and further to 18 152 t in 2021. A recovery began in 2022, with the market reaching 28 785 t, and continued into 2023, rising to 34 437 t. In value terms, this rebound was even more pronounced, with the market growing from 87.2 million $ US in 2022 to 129.2 million $ US in 2023.

The market recovery in 2023 was supported by structural developments across the region. In Morocco, a government initiative to modernize wholesale fruit and vegetable markets aimed to streamline distribution and improve price control, potentially enhancing supply chain efficiency for dried vegetables. Concurrently, the gradual introduction of freeze-dried fruits and vegetables created a new, premium product segment, catering to growing consumer demand for convenient and healthy options. In Algeria, strategic foreign investment entered the sector as Agrana Fruit acquired a stake in a leading local processor, ELAFRUITS, strengthening industrial capacity and innovation for processed fruit and vegetable products, which includes dried vegetables.

Further regulatory measures emerged in early 2024, with Algeria's cancellation of the 9% value-added tax on dried vegetables to reduce consumer prices and support purchasing power. While drought conditions in Morocco affected fresh produce supply and prices, this may have increased interest in shelf-stable alternatives like dried vegetables.
