Earlier Report Observations

The U.S. carrot and turnip market volume expanded from 3 508 thousand tons in 2018 to 3 619 thousand tons in 2019. This growth was primarily driven by increasing per capita consumption, which rose from 7.4 to 8.5 pounds per person, as consumers sought healthier foods and snack alternatives like baby carrots. Although unfavorable weather and limited storage infrastructure posed challenges, domestic production met most of the demand.

Market volume then fell to 3 524 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 3 312 thousand tons in 2021. The decline was largely attributed to pandemic-related global supply chain disruptions and unfavorable weather conditions in producing regions, which hampered transportation, reduced production, and affected shelf life. California, accounting for over 85% of U.S. carrot production, maintained its leading role, but overall consumption dropped.

A recovery followed in 2022, with volume reaching 3 513 thousand tons, supported by economic improvements and the industry's digitalization efforts to enhance supply chain resilience despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties. In 2023, volume dipped to 3 345 thousand tons, while major players like Bolthouse Fresh Foods introduced new branding and packaging to reinforce quality positioning. By 2024, the market value had grown to $2.2 billion, with export prices remaining stable around $1,401 per ton, reflecting continued consumer preference for organic and convenience formats.
