Earlier Report Observations

The carbon dioxide market in Austria opened the period with a volume of 175.8 thousand tons in 2018. Consumption fell to 161.5 thousand tons the following year, even though increased steel production after a blast furnace revision boosted industrial CO2 availability. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 reduced economic activity and transport emissions, impacting CO2 demand across sectors.

By 2022, market volume had recovered to 169.0 thousand tons. This occurred against a backdrop of the war in Ukraine, which disrupted energy markets and drove inflation, while technological shifts like growing electric vehicle adoption altered emission patterns. Despite overall greenhouse gas emissions declining, the market for captured CO2 showed resilience.

From 2023 onward, binding emission caps under the Climate Protection Act (KSG) and international climate commitments accelerated CO2 reduction efforts. Milder weather and a slight economic contraction further contributed to lower consumption, with the market volume dropping to 149.9 thousand tons in 2023 and 141.4 thousand tons in 2024.
