Earlier Report Observations

The Austrian alumina and primary aluminium market contracted significantly between 2018 and 2020. Market volume fell from 809 thousand tonnes to 619.2 thousand tonnes, a drop of 23.5%, while market value declined from 1.91 billion US dollars to 1.34 billion, down 29.7%. This was driven by reductions in both domestic production, which dropped from 535.4 thousand tonnes to 423.8 thousand tonnes, and imports, which fell from 502.6 thousand tonnes to 383.5 thousand tonnes over the same period.

After 2020, with production data unavailable, import trends showed a recovery. Import volumes rebounded to 423 thousand tonnes in 2021 and surged to a peak of 599.9 thousand tonnes in 2022, before moderating to 522.8 thousand tonnes in 2023 and 518.4 thousand tonnes in 2024. In value terms, imports spiked to 1.71 billion US dollars in 2022, reflecting higher prices or changed composition, then settled around 1.35 billion in the following years. Exports remained relatively stable, ranging between 211.3 and 234.1 thousand tonnes annually from 2021 to 2024.
