Earlier Report Observations

Senegal's cabbage production more than doubled from 76.1 thousand tons in 2018 to 158.4 thousand tons in 2020. This surge was driven by government policies specifically targeting horticulture development, including the establishment of a Horticulture Directorate and the implementation of the PRACAS 2 program (2018-2022) aimed at making agriculture more competitive and diversified. Additionally, the structuring of the value chain in the Niayes region with adapted varieties enabled year-round production, supporting increased output.

After peaking, production stabilized around 159 thousand tons in 2021 before a modest dip to 155 thousand tons in 2022. During this period, efforts to modernize market access, such as the Ministry of Trade and SMEs' project to build cold storage facilities and develop the National Interest Market, improved the commercialization conditions for cabbage. By 2023, production recovered to 161.5 thousand tons, fueled by consumer preference for high-quality cabbage destined for supermarkets, upscale hotels, and export markets like France, Belgium, and China.
