Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for dried shelled beans in Senegal experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. It grew from 117.8 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 256.0 thousand tons in 2020. This was followed by a contraction to 157.4 thousand tons in 2022, before recovering to 226.9 thousand tons in 2023.

The rebound in 2023 was primarily driven by a marked increase in the production of pulses, including cowpeas. This resulted from the expansion of cultivated areas, favorable yields due to good climatic conditions, and improved access to production factors. Furthermore, trade flows with neighboring countries were disrupted by civil insecurity and export bans, which limited imports of dry grains and pulses and bolstered local supply.
