Earlier Report Observations

Brown rice production in Guatemala showed variable dynamics from 2018 to 2023. The initial increase from 2 265 tons in 2018 to 2 534 tons in 2019 occurred alongside the implementation of government crop monitoring systems and market information aimed at improving commercialization. However, domestic output remained insufficient to meet national demand, requiring imports.

A significant production surge to 3 366 tons in 2020 was followed by a sharp drop to 2 076 tons in 2021. This decline was driven by the elimination of tariffs on rice imports from the United States, which created unfair competition for local producers due to US subsidies, coupled with a reported lack of government initiative to address the sector's structural issues.

Production rebounded to 3 227 tons in 2022, supported by the launch of new, higher-yielding rice varieties such as ICTA Robusta, adapted to local growing conditions. Nevertheless, output fell again to 2 682 tons in 2023 due to persistent adverse climate factors and high production costs, which continued to limit the competitiveness and expansion of rice cultivation in the country.
