Following the introduction in 2018 of mandatory origin labeling and precise naming rules for rice, the Italian brown rice market grew to 246.7 thousand tons in 2019, aided by a 60% surge in imports to 88.0 thousand tons.

Market volume halved to 120.0 thousand tons in 2020, then edged up to 125.5 thousand tons in 2021. A sharp rise to 183.3 thousand tons occurred in 2022 as political tensions and unfavorable dollar exchange rates cut exports by 25%, leaving more product for the domestic market.

Prolonged drought in 2023 led to a 27% drop in production and reduced market volume to 107.8 thousand tons. In 2024, ongoing adverse weather, structural oversupply, and the imposition of 15% tariffs on Italian rice in the US kept market volume at 103.9 thousand tons.
