Earlier Report Observations

The broken rice market in Laos expanded from 768 thousand tons in 2018 to 818 thousand tons in 2019, driven by an increase in domestic production from 774 to 798 thousand tons and a substantial rise in imports from 4.4 to 21.7 thousand tons.

Market volume contracted to 712 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 651 thousand tons in 2021, as production declined to 690 thousand tons in 2020 and 637 thousand tons in 2021. During this period, the government's plan to achieve annual rice production of at least 4 million tons by 2020 was not realized.

A strong recovery occurred from 2022 onward, with market volume rebounding to 795 thousand tons in 2022 and reaching 935 thousand tons in 2023, fueled by production resurgence to 764 and 906 thousand tons respectively. In 2024, factors including currency depreciation, high inflation, and the operational China-Laos railway began influencing trade, with imports remaining high at 34.8 thousand tons and exports increasing to 10.4 thousand tons.
