This contraction was driven primarily by a steep fall in local production, which more than halved from 981.7 thousand tons to 462.8 thousand tons over the same period.

A partial rebound occurred in 2023, as market size increased to 324.7 thousand tons. Exports remained volatile throughout, while imports stayed marginal, never exceeding 5.2 thousand tons annually. In value terms, the market mirrored this trend, shrinking from $156.5 million in 2018 to $59.7 million in 2023.

Laos's maize production has declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 684 thousand tons of maize, marking a significant 13.9% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 42.7%, which translates to an annualized decline rate of 16.9%.

Foreign maize supplies from Laos increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 201.2 thousand tons, showing an 11.0% improvement over the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 30.1%, with a CAGR of -11.3%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 166.9 thousand tons, which also saw the largest decline of 42.0% that year.
