The market for bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits and bakers’ wares in Cabo Verde showed significant volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 1 717 tons, consumption peaked at 2 222 tons in 2019 before contracting sharply to 1 604 tons in 2020. The overall trend across the period was upward, ending at 2 320 tons in 2023, but the path was marked by considerable year-to-year volatility.

A pronounced downturn in 2020 reduced the market by over 27% from the previous year. This was followed by a strong 33% rebound in 2021, lifting the volume to 2 139 tons. The market moderated slightly in 2022, declining by 6.7% to 1 995 tons, before climbing again by 16% in 2023 to reach the highest point in the observed period.

Throughout these years, import volumes consistently formed the bulk of market supply, while domestic production remained relatively stable, ranging between 368 and 480 tons annually. The shifts in total market volume were therefore primarily driven by changes in import levels, which saw large swings from 1 402 tons to over 2 000 tons.
