The market for bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits and bakers’ wares in Barbados expanded significantly in 2019, with volume rising by 23% to 3 622 tons and value increasing by 25% to 12 644 thousand US dollars. This growth was followed by a sharp contraction in 2020, where market volume dropped by 31% to 2 491 tons and value fell by 30% to 8 811 thousand US dollars.

After the 2020 decline, the market entered a recovery phase. Volume stabilized in 2021 at 2 318 tons, then grew by 5% in 2022 to 2 443 tons, and further by 11% in 2023 to 2 704 tons. In value terms, the rebound was more pronounced: from 8 486 thousand US dollars in 2021, the market grew by 19% in 2022 to 10 069 thousand US dollars, and by 22% in 2023 to 12 280 thousand US dollars, surpassing the pre-2020 peak.

Barbados saw its production of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares decline after two consecutive years of growth. In 2019, output peaked at 2 880 tonnes, marking a significant 23.8% increase from the previous year. However, by 2020, production had fallen sharply to 1 801 tonnes, representing a dramatic 37.5% year-over-year reduction. Over the entire 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 21.2%, with an average annual decline of 7.6%.

Following two years of growth, the value of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares production in Barbados declined. In 2019, output reached its highest point at 8 630 thousand US dollars, reflecting a 23.7% increase. By 2020, however, production value had dropped to 5 483 thousand US dollars, down 36.5% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 21.3%, with an average annual decline of 7.7%.

After two years of expansion, Barbados's exports of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares declined. In 2018, exports grew by 8.9%, reaching a peak of 3 350 tonnes in 2019. By 2020, exports had fallen to 3 240 tonnes, a modest 3.3% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 14.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Jamaica, and Guyana were the three largest markets for Barbados's exports of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares in volume terms. Together, these countries accounted for 58.8% of total export flows.

In 2018, imports increased by 10.5%, reaching a peak of 4 091 tonnes in 2019. By 2020, imports had fallen to 3 929 tonnes, a 4.0% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 17%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.4%.
