Nepal's bread market volume expanded strongly from 2018 to 2021, reaching a peak of 8 260 t. This growth was entirely driven by a rise in imports, which more than doubled over those years. Domestic production remained stable at a modest level of around 130 t annually.

After 2021, the market contracted sharply, falling to 3 697 t in 2023. This decline coincided with a significant drop in import volumes, which nearly halved from their peak. Exports, while very small, began to increase from 2022, slightly offsetting imports.

In 2020, Nepal produced 135.0 tons of bread, marking a 6.2% increase compared to 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 18.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 5.9%. The most significant increase occurred in 2018, with a rise of 11.9%, while 2019 saw minimal change.

Exports bread from Nepal

The export market in value terms displayed an unstable trend throughout this period. Export values fluctuated significantly, with a 112-fold difference between the low in 2018 and the high in 2020. Nepal's bread imports have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Nepal imported a total of 6,360 tons of bread, representing a 49.7% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 138.8%, equating to an average annual growth rate of 33.7%.

In 2020, import volume amounted to 11,460 thousand US dollars, marking a sharp increase of 36.2% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, India, Bangladesh, and Malaysia were the principal suppliers of bread to Nepal in value terms. India accounted for 62.2% of imports, Bangladesh for 16.6%, and Malaysia for 7.5%. Together, these three countries made up 86.3% of total imports in value terms.
