The bread market volume in Finland experienced a slight decline from 297 thousand tons in 2018 to 287 thousand tons in 2020. During this period, significant price margins in the bread and grain product segments influenced market structure and competition. At the same time, the growing popularity of sourdough bread and home baking shifted consumer preferences.

Market volume recovered and expanded, reaching 300 thousand tons in 2021 and 324 thousand tons in 2023. The 6.7% increase in 2022 coincided with persistently high price margins for bread and grain products, which affected market price formation and competitive dynamics.

In value terms, the bread market grew to $1,277 million in 2024. The introduction of new Nordic nutrition recommendations, which for the first time set a quantitative daily intake for whole grains, along with Bread Week promoting whole grain products, stimulated demand for healthier bread options.
