The market for bran, sharps and residues in Oman experienced substantial fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 298.6 thousand tonnes, market volume rose to a peak of 521.9 thousand tonnes in 2021, representing a dramatic expansion over three years. This surge was followed by a contraction in the subsequent two years, bringing the market size down to 355.3 thousand tonnes by 2023.

The sharp increase in 2021 was primarily driven by a spike in imports, which more than doubled compared to the previous year to reach 405.5 thousand tonnes. Domestic production, meanwhile, showed relative stability, fluctuating between 112.3 and 139.9 thousand tonnes throughout the period. Exports, which had seen a brief uptick in 2019 and 2020, fell to minimal levels after 2021, contributing to the overall market expansion that year.

Following the 2021 peak, the market corrected in 2022 and 2023 as import volumes declined significantly. By 2023, imports had fallen back to 235.7 thousand tonnes, aligning the total market size closer to its pre-surge levels, while domestic production showed a slight recovery.
