Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the market volume for bran and residues from cereal processing in Malawi expanded from 235 thousand tonnes to 252 thousand tonnes. This growth was interrupted in 2020 when a sharp slowdown in agricultural sector growth to 3.1% limited the availability of residues from crops like millet and sorghum.

A severe contraction to 191 thousand tonnes occurred in 2022, driven directly by unfavorable weather that caused maize production to fall by 18.9% and reduced output of other cereals. This significantly constrained the supply of processing residues, while exports surged to 51 thousand tonnes, further reducing domestic market volume. A partial recovery to 210 thousand tonnes followed in 2023.

By 2024, Malawi's government launched a new National Agriculture Policy and a National Irrigation Policy, alongside the upscaling of a digital farmer registration system, initiatives focused on strengthening the cereal production base.
