Earlier Report Observations

The European market for bran, sharps and residues from cereal or legume processing displayed considerable volatility in volume from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 21.9 million tons in 2018, consumption fell by 15% to 18.6 million tons in 2019. It stabilized around 19.0 million tons in 2020 before surging 17% to 22.2 million tons in 2021, the peak for the period. After this high, volume declined by 10% to 20.0 million tons in 2022 and a further 7% to 18.6 million tons in 2023.

In value terms, the market followed a different trajectory, especially in 2021 and 2022. The market value jumped from $9.2 billion in 2020 to $13.4 billion in 2021, a 45% increase, driven by rising prices. Despite a volume drop in 2022, value continued to climb to $15.2 billion, indicating sustained price pressure. However, in 2023, both volume and value fell sharply, with value dropping 21% to $12.1 billion.

Production trends largely mirrored market volume, peaking at 23.8 million tons in 2021 before declining to 20.4 million tons in 2023. Net trade – imports minus exports – remained relatively stable, with imports around 2-3 million tons and exports 4-5 million tons annually, contributing to the market size calculations.
