The Polish bicycle market experienced significant shifts between 2018 and 2021. A trend toward urban and road bicycles supported initial growth, with market volume reaching 1.2 million units in 2019. In 2020, Poland solidified its position as Europe's second-largest producer of electric bicycles, manufacturing 48 000 e-bikes. This move toward higher-value electric models drove market value up to US$ 204.5 million, even as unit consumption dipped. National sales peaked in 2021 at 1.46 million units, accompanied by expanding electric bicycle production and market share.

After the 2021 peak, market volume in units contracted, falling to 658 000 units by 2023. Market value, however, remained elevated, reaching US$ 325.6 million in 2022, reflecting sustained consumer interest in premium electric bicycles. During this period, the Polish Bicycle Association proposed legislative changes to classify e-bikes as electric vehicles, aiming to unlock government purchase subsidies. The share of electric bicycles in the market grew from 16% in 2020 to 25% in 2023, setting the stage for a recovery.

In 2024, the market rebounded to 745 000 units valued at US$ 312.9 million. This turnaround was fueled by draft legislation for e-bike purchase incentives, the expansion of dedicated cycling infrastructure, and the introduction of Warsaw's first clean transport zone. Investments from companies like DPD Poland in electric cargo bikes, alongside technological innovations and rising environmental awareness, further boosted demand for electric bicycles, driving the market toward record value levels.

Poland's bicycle production has been growing for three consecutive years. In 2020, the output value reached 264.8 million US dollars, marking an 18.8% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 25.9%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 8.0%.

In 2020, Poland produced 1.087 million units of bicycles, showing a strong increase of 11.6% from the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 974,000 units, which also saw the largest decline of 10.0%.

Bicycle exports from Poland declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, Poland exported 678,200 units, a slight decrease of 0.9% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 17.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.5%. The peak was in 2018 at 858,200 units, which also saw the largest increase of 48.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 20.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Czechia, and Slovakia consistently led the country structure of bicycle exports in volume terms. Germany accounted for 57.6% of exports, Czechia for 10.1%, and Slovakia for 5.7%, together making up 73.4% of total export flows.

After two years of growth, Poland's bicycle exports in value terms declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 157.6 million US dollars, down by 10.9% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 16.1%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 5.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 176.8 million US dollars, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 20.8%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Germany, Czechia, and France remained the top markets for Poland's bicycle exports in value terms, collectively accounting for 72.0% of total export flows.

Following two years of growth, Poland's bicycle imports in volume terms declined. In 2020, imports totaled 644,100 units, a significant drop of 29.4% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 7.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.4%. The peak was in 2019 at 912,600 units, which also saw the largest increase of 34.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Portugal, China, and Italy were the main sources for Poland's bicycle imports in volume terms. Portugal contributed 26.8% of imports, China 16.8%, and Italy 9.2%, together representing 52.7% of total import flows.

After two years of increase, Poland's bicycle imports in value terms fell. In 2020, imports were valued at 97.2 million US dollars, a decrease of 12.1% year-over-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 28.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.8%. The highest value was in 2019 at 110.6 million US dollars, and the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 44.8%.
