Earlier Report Observations
Production of beef, sheep and goat fats in Suriname rose from 56 760 kg in 2018 to 63 850 kg in 2021. This expansion was primarily driven by the introduction of a national animal identification system with ear tags for cattle, sheep and goats, which improved disease monitoring and traceability, reducing livestock losses and supporting higher output. Concurrently, the enforcement of the Law on Inspection of Meat and Other Animal Products, with strict penalties for violations, reinforced quality standards and contributed to more efficient production practices.
After reaching its peak, production declined to 61 370 kg in 2022 and further to 57 960 kg in 2023. During this period, the government continued to invest in technical capacity building, including the construction of the LVV Cluster laboratory to enhance animal health monitoring and product inspection capabilities, although these long-term initiatives did not reverse the short-term decrease in production volumes.
