The market for fresh or chilled beans in Romania showed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. Volume peaked at 31 854 tons in 2020, then contracted sharply over the next two years, falling to 13 832 tons in 2022—a decline of more than 50% from the high.

Domestic production followed a similar trajectory, dropping from 29 550 tons in 2020 to 11 400 tons in 2023. The most pronounced decrease occurred between 2021 and 2022, when output more than halved.

A partial recovery lifted the market volume to 16 252 tons in 2023, but it remained 47% below the 2018 level, reflecting a significantly smaller overall market.

Following a two-year decline, bean production in Romania rebounded in 2020. That year, the country produced 29 550 tonnes of beans, marking a significant year-on-year increase of 10.7%. However, over the entire 2017-2020 period, production fell by 53.4%, which translates to an average annual decline of 22.5%. The lowest output was recorded in 2019 at 26 690 tonnes, while the steepest drop occurred in 2018 with a 57.7% decrease.

The export market for beans from Romania exhibited notable volatility during the observed period. Exports reached their peak in 2019 at 351 tonnes, but fell to their lowest point in 2017, showing a 5.7-fold difference between these years. In 2020, bean exports from Romania amounted to 239 tonnes, representing a sharp decline of 31.8% compared to 2019. The most substantial increase was recorded in 2019, with a surge of 341.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, Italy, and Germany were the leading buyers of beans from Romania, accounting for 42.1%, 19.4%, and 16.5% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries constituted 78.1% of Romania's total bean exports by volume.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 975.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 120.8%.

Bean imports into Romania declined for the second year in a row in 2020, reaching 2 543 tonnes, which was 12.8% lower than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports saw a modest overall increase of 2.9%, averaging 1.0% per year. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 3 913 tonnes. The largest decrease occurred in 2019 with a 25.5% drop, while the most significant increase was in 2018, up by 58.3%.
