The market for fresh or chilled beans in Romania showed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. Volume peaked at 31 854 tons in 2020, then contracted sharply over the next two years, falling to 13 832 tons in 2022—a decline of more than 50% from the high.

Domestic production followed a similar trajectory, dropping from 29 550 tons in 2020 to 11 400 tons in 2023. The most pronounced decrease occurred between 2021 and 2022, when output more than halved.

A partial recovery lifted the market volume to 16 252 tons in 2023, but it remained 47% below the 2018 level, reflecting a significantly smaller overall market.

Following a two-year decline, bean production in Romania rebounded in 2020. That year, the country produced 29 550 tonnes of beans, marking a significant year-on-year increase of 10.7%. However, over the entire 2017-2020 period, production fell by 53.4%, which translates to an average annual decline of 22.5%. The lowest output was recorded in 2019 at 26 690 tonnes, while the steepest drop occurred in 2018 with a 57.7% decrease.

The export market for beans from Romania exhibited notable volatility during the observed period. Exports reached their peak in 2019 at 351 tonnes, but fell to their lowest point in 2017, showing a 5.7-fold difference between these years.
