The Norwegian market for fresh or chilled beans grew to 1 830 t in 2019, fueled by rising consumer awareness of the health benefits from legumes—such as fiber and protein—and a broader focus on sustainable, local food production. Although interest in domestic protein crops increased, the actual supply of Norwegian beans remained limited, with a narrow assortment available in retail stores.

Market volume fell to 1 577 t in 2020, coinciding with global supply-chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, even as Norwegian consumers showed greater interest in local and sustainable options. By 2021, the market stabilized near 1 569 t, a period that also saw retailers expand their private-label offerings in fresh produce, potentially altering market channels, while domestic bean production continued to face capacity constraints.

A clear policy push for Norwegian protein crops to enhance self-sufficiency and sustainability, outlined in a 2022 Agriculture Directorate report, contributed to a market recovery to 1 670 t that year. The market then receded to 1 567 t in 2023, reflecting the variable dynamics of a sector where domestic production is still developing.

Beans production in Norway has declined for the second year in a row. In 2021, Norway produced 1 057 tonnes of beans, marking a controlled drop of 8.6% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production decreased by 6.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.2%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 1 308 tonnes, which saw the largest increase of 15.6%. The most significant decline occurred in 2020, with a drop of 11.5%.

After a two-year decrease, foreign bean supplies to Norway increased. In 2021, the import volume amounted to 511.2 tonnes, representing a substantial rise of 20.2% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, imports decreased by 6.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.4%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2020 at 425.3 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 19.4%.
