Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh alliaceous vegetables in Mauritius remained stable at around 21 000 t annually from 2018 to 2020. During this period, local production grew from 4 653 t to 5 275 t, supported by the 2018 Use of Pesticides Act aimed at improving crop quality and safety, alongside government promotion of greenhouse cultivation with funding and expert support. However, persistent difficulties for local growers to meet demand kept imports consistently above 15 000 t per year.

A significant market expansion to 22 669 t occurred in 2021, driven by a surge in domestic output to 7 406 t. This growth coincided with the UN International Year of Fruits and Vegetables, which heightened focus on nutritional security. Consumer preferences increasingly shifted toward organic and frozen produce due to pesticide residue concerns, while new online retailers entered the market. In 2022, the introduction of a Maximum Mark-Up Mechanism for frozen and canned vegetables aimed to stabilize prices, and local production climbed further to 9 302 t as imports fell to 12 641 t.

The market contracted sharply to 10 070 t in 2023, as imports collapsed to 1 389 t and local production moderated to 8 681 t. This followed earlier supply chain disruptions and increased import costs during the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside the ongoing effects of the price control mechanism introduced the previous year.
