From 2019 to 2021, the market volume declined to 637.1 thousand tons. It then recovered, rising to 732.4 thousand tons in 2023, with the market value increasing to $1,580 million, reflecting higher prices or changes in market structure. By 2024, new trends included Ivorian exporters offering Global GAP-certified beans, enhancing quality standards, and rising demand for plant-based proteins driven by vegan and vegetarian diets. Technological innovations in processing and packaging also improved product quality and shelf life, supporting market development.

Beans production in Africa has declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Africa produced 845.9 K t of beans, which is 1.2% lower than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 7.4%, with an average annual decline of 2.5%.

In 2020, the value of beans output in Africa was 1 536 M $ US, marking a gradual decline of 8.0% compared to the previous year. Beans exports from Africa have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 193.3 K t, representing a slight fall of 1.6% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 7%, with an annualized growth rate of 2.3%. The peak was recorded in 2018 at 206.4 K t, with the largest decline in 2019 at 4.8% and the largest increase in 2018 at 14.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the three largest markets for beans exports in kind were Spain, the Netherlands, and France, which together accounted for 71.7% of total flows.

After a two-year rise, cross-border shipments of beans from Africa declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 351.0 M $ US, reflecting a gradual contraction of 8.4% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 2.5%, with an annualized rate of 0.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 383.4 M $ US, and the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 3.3%.

Over the period 2017–2020, Spain, France, and the Netherlands were the main markets for beans exports in value terms, representing 41.2%, 19.2%, and 18.8% of total exports, respectively. Together, they accounted for 79.2% of total flows.

In 2020, Africa imported 11.0 K t of beans, representing a sudden decline of 27.2% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 37.8%, with an annualized rate of 14.6%. The largest decline was in 2018 at 35.3%, while the largest increase was in 2019 at 32.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey were the leading suppliers of beans to Africa in kind, accounting for 3.0%, 2.0%, and 0.6% of imports, respectively. Together, they made up 5.5% of total imports in kind.

Imported beans volumes in Africa have declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 6.3 M $ US, reflecting a fall of 14.4% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 46.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -18.8%.

In 2017–2020, the country structure of beans imports in value terms was highly diversified. China, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States accounted for 6.1%, 1.9%, and 0.8% of imports, respectively, totaling only 8.8% of total flows. The remaining 91.2% was formed by a long tail of smaller markets.
