The barley market volume in Northern Europe showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. After starting at 12 082 thousand tons in 2018, it surged to 15 540 thousand tons in 2019, marking a significant expansion. The market then stabilized in 2020 at a similar level of 15 566 thousand tons.

A sharp contraction followed in 2021, with market volume dropping to 13 143 thousand tons. This was reversed in 2022 when the market grew robustly to reach 16 811 thousand tons, the highest point in the period. However, in 2023 the market volume fell again to 12 232 thousand tons, bringing it below the initial 2018 level.

Barley production in Northern Europe grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 18 754 thousand tons, a modest 2.0% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 7%, averaging 2.3% annually. The lowest output was in 2018 at 15 302 thousand tons, which saw the largest decline of 12.7%. The biggest increase occurred in 2019 with a 20.2% jump.

Following two years of growth, barley production value in Northern Europe decreased. In 2020, the output was valued at 4 358 million US dollars, a slight 3.0% drop from the previous year. Barley export value from Northern Europe rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 737.5 million US dollars, a 2.0% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 17.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.6%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 568.9 million US dollars, which experienced the largest decline of 9.1%. The biggest increase happened in 2019 with a 27.1% rise.

During 2017-2020, Germany (16.3% of export value), Saudi Arabia (15.9%), and the Netherlands (13.5%) were key buyers of barley from Northern Europe. However, their combined share reached just 45.6% of total export value, with the remaining 54.4% spread across numerous other partners.

Barley imports into Northern Europe fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, import volume was 422 thousand tons, a 22.5% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 2.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.8%. The highest volume was in 2018 at 637 thousand tons, which also saw the largest increase of 54.4%.
