Earlier Report Observations

The European barley market volume grew from 64 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 79 thousand tonnes in 2019, a period marked by geopolitical uncertainties and price fluctuations but no major regulatory shifts. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic sharply reduced demand for malting barley due to bar and restaurant closures, lowering the market to 77 thousand tonnes.

Post-pandemic recovery remained slow in 2021, with market volume falling further to 70 thousand tonnes. The following year, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted barley exports, increasing domestic availability and pushing the market up to 86 thousand tonnes in 2022.

In 2023, adverse weather conditions led to lower yields and production in several European regions, contributing to a decline in market volume to 66 thousand tonnes.
