Earlier Report Observations

The banana market in Seychelles began a period of gradual expansion from 2018, supported by a renewed interest in domestic cultivation. Small-scale banana plantations in local households started to recover, displacing some other crops and fruit trees, which contributed to increased production and a rising market volume.

Market volume remained stable over the following years, reaching a peak of 2 017 t in 2021 before a minor adjustment to 2 008 t in 2022. It returned to 2 014 t in 2023, reflecting consistent domestic output with very little reliance on imports, which typically accounted for only 1-3 t annually.

In 2024, significant supply disruptions for imported bananas from Colombia, caused by heatwaves and droughts, affected availability and prices. Imports fell to 1 t that year, highlighting the market's exposure to external climate-related shocks in source countries.
