Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, Portugal's banana market volume experienced fluctuations influenced by export dynamics and production changes. The establishment of the Drought Commission in 2017 helped monitor and mitigate agricultural impacts from dry conditions. In 2019, a sharp 57% increase in export value limited the volume available domestically, keeping the market size stable. Import growth then drove market expansion in 2020, before a contraction in 2021 as imports fell and exports continued to rise.

The market structure shifted from 2022 onward due to a strong recovery in the Madeira banana sector. After restructuring its cooperatives, Madeira achieved a record year in 2022 with a 63% production increase and a 144% rise in grower income. This revitalization supported supply chains, leading to an 11% growth in banana commercialisation from Madeira in 2023, with most output shipped to mainland Portugal, which contributed to the rebound in domestic market volume that year.
