Earlier Report Observations

The ballpoint pen market in Hungary experienced substantial fluctuations between 2018 and 2024. In volume terms, the market contracted sharply from over 43 thousand units in 2018 and 2019 to just 26 thousand units in 2020, followed by a gradual recovery to 41 thousand units by 2024. In value terms, the decline was more pronounced, with the market falling from USD 6.2 million in 2019 to USD 2.2 million in 2024, indicating a significant drop in average market prices.

Domestic production halved from 8 thousand units in 2018 to 4.7 thousand units in 2023 before edging up to 5.5 thousand units in 2024. Imports, which constitute the bulk of supply, remained high, peaking at 80.7 thousand units in 2022 and settling at 78.7 thousand units in 2024. Exports grew steadily over the period, doubling from 25 thousand units in 2018 to 45.3 thousand units in 2025, reducing net domestic availability.

The market's low point in 2020 coincided with a steep drop in both volume and value. Subsequent years saw volume recovery, but value continued to fall, suggesting a structural shift toward lower-priced products. By 2024, the market volume had nearly returned to pre-2020 levels, yet its value was only a third of the 2019 figure.
