The aubergine market in Gabon, with a volume of 100.2 t in 2018, was initially characterized by high import dependence for fresh produce. The launch of the 'Gabon Vert' strategy under the broader 'Gabon Émergent' plan provided public funding for horticultural projects, including aubergines, aiming to reduce imports. This support gradually increased local production and raised the market volume to 101.5 t by 2020.

A significant regulatory shift occurred in June 2021 when the government established the National Chamber of Agriculture and mandated that supermarkets and food companies source at least 50% of their fresh products locally. This rule created a guaranteed demand for domestic aubergines, incentivized new local and regional players to enter the market, and drove production up sharply. As a result, the market volume grew to 102.9 t in 2021. Continued public investment through the Acceleration Transformation Plan helped maintain production above 102 t, with the market volume peaking at 104.1 t in 2022 before stabilizing at 102.7 t in 2023.

By 2024, the full implementation of the 2021 law brought stricter traceability requirements for fresh vegetables. A European Union export ban on certain Gabonese vegetables, including aubergines, redirected supply toward the domestic market. Public funding programs further supported the establishment of new peri-urban farming cooperatives, sustaining the entry of new producers into the aubergine sector.
