The Italian orange market by volume grew from 1.6 million tonnes in 2018 to 1.9 million tonnes in 2023. This period saw a strong increase through 2020, a contraction in 2021, and a return to growth in the following years.

In monetary terms, the market value rose more sharply from $1.6 billion to $2.5 billion over the same period. The notable 20% value jump in 2023, compared to a modest volume increase, suggests a significant rise in average prices or a shift in the product mix.

The market demonstrated resilience, reaching new peaks in both volume and value by 2023 after recovering from the dip observed in 2021.

Italy's orange production volume increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Italy produced 1 773 K t of oranges, representing a modest gain of 7.4% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 9.3%, equating to an annualized rate of 3.0%. The lowest production was recorded in 2018 at 1 592 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 1.8%.

Orange production in Italy increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output of oranges was valued at 2 053 M $ US in Italy, marking a significant gain of 15.9% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production rose by 28.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 8.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 583 M $ US, which also experienced the largest decline of 0.6%.

In 2020, foreign orange supplies from Italy reached 112.8 K t, showing a slight uptick of 3.0% year-over-year. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 109.5 K t, which saw the largest decline of 20.9%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 138.3 K t, with the largest increase of 24.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany (26.8% of exports in kind), Switzerland (14.9% of exports in kind), and France (14.0% of exports in kind) continued to be the main buyers of oranges from Italy, jointly forming 55.7% of total exports in kind.

In 2020, Italy's volume of orange exports amounted to 130.6 M $ US, equivalent to a gain of 11.2% compared with 2019. Over 2017–2020, Spain (54.9% of imports in kind), South Africa (17.3% of imports in kind), and Egypt (8.4% of imports in kind) remained the leading destinations in the country structure of imports in kind, with a combined share of 80.6% of total flows.

After a two-year drop, Italy's volume of orange imports increased. In 2020, imports stood at 210.3 M $ US, up by 66.3% versus the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 21.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 6.8%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 126.5 M $ US. The largest decline was recorded in 2018 at 20.5%.
