The market volume for fresh watermelons and melons in Peru experienced significant shifts from 2018 to 2023, starting at 100 thousand tons in 2018 and reaching 169 thousand tons in 2023. After a peak of 136 thousand tons in 2021, the market contracted to 121 thousand tons in 2022 before rebounding strongly the following year.

The sector's expansion was supported by the active involvement of state-owned and private companies in agroindustrial exports early in the period. The notable growth in 2023 aligned with Peru's sustained economic growth near 3.5% and the push by supermarket chains like Intercorp's Mass brand to commercialize fresh fruit products, including melon-based beverages. These distribution changes, alongside increasing consumer focus on traceability and healthy eating, helped drive domestic consumption.

In 2024, a legislative proposal was presented that would require beverages promoted with images of fruits such as watermelon and melon to contain at least 50% fruit pulp, aiming to ensure truthful labeling and protect consumer health.
