The fresh apple market in Iraq showed high volatility from 2018 to 2023. Following a sharp expansion in 2019, where market volume jumped by over 60% to 529 thousand tons, a contraction occurred in 2020. The market rebounded to a record 546 thousand tons in 2021 but then fell again in 2022 and stabilized at 479 thousand tons in 2023.

Domestic apple production increased until 2020, reaching 79 thousand tons, but then entered a downward trend, declining to 74 thousand tons by 2023. Imports, which constitute the primary supply source, fluctuated in sync with total market volume, peaking at 467 thousand tons in 2021.

In 2024, apple imports fell to 371 thousand tons. This decline coincided with drought and climatic changes affecting Iraq's agricultural sector, as well as shifts in consumer behavior driven by rising prices and exchange rate fluctuations of the Iraqi dinar.

Iraq's apple production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 79 413 tonnes of apples, representing a gradual increase of 4.7% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 66.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 18.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 5%, equating to an annualized rate of 1.6%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 273.0 thousand tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 452.8 thousand tonnes. The largest decline was observed in 2018 at 27.2%, and the most significant increase took place in 2019 at 65.9%.
