From 2018 to 2020, the Portuguese market for animal guts, bladders and stomachs experienced fluctuations in volume. In physical terms, market size stood at 12 432 t in 2018, declined by 5.9% to 11 704 t in 2019, then grew by 12.0% to 13 112 t in 2020. In value terms, the market contraction was more pronounced, falling from 36 820 thousand $ in 2018 to 29 352 thousand $ in 2019, a drop of 20.3%, before recovering to 33 308 thousand $ in 2020, an increase of 13.5%.

Following 2020, import and export trends showed significant movements. Import volumes peaked at 24 381 t in 2022 before declining to 14 843 t by 2025. Export volumes also contracted from 14 651 t in 2022 to 8 145 t in 2025. In monetary terms, both trade flows saw a downward trajectory from 2018 levels, with imports falling from 97 012 thousand $ to 52 785 thousand $ and exports from 105 050 thousand $ to 58 337 thousand $ over the 2018-2025 period.

From 2018 to 2021, France, Spain, and Russia were the top destinations for Portugal's exports of animal guts, bladders, and stomachs by volume. France accounted for 26.7% of exports, Spain for 13.7%, and Russia for 11.5%, together making up 51.9% of total flows.
