The Romanian market for aluminium tubes and pipes grew strongly in 2022, with volume reaching 33,715 tonnes, a 14% increase from 2021, and market value surging by 50% to $154.4 million, supported by a sharp rise in imports to over 10,000 tonnes. This expansion reversed in 2023 as market volume fell by 3% to 32,793 tonnes and value dropped by 11% to $137.0 million. The contraction coincided with a raw material crisis, steep increases in electricity and natural gas prices, and higher transport costs, which drove up prices for construction materials like aluminium and dampened demand.

Import volumes remained elevated above 10,000 tonnes in 2023 and 2024, indicating continued reliance on foreign supply. By 2024, global geopolitical tensions and trade conflicts contributed to rising aluminium prices, while major investment projects under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) sustained demand for construction materials. However, a shortage of skilled construction workers and a decline in building permits began to pressure the construction sector, potentially limiting consumption growth for aluminium products.

In 2020, Romania's exports of aluminium tubes and pipes reached 1,214 tonnes, representing a sharp decline of 58.7% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 64.8%, which translates to an annualized decrease of 29.4%. The only increase during this period occurred in 2019, when exports grew by 6.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Germany were the primary destinations for Romania's aluminium tube and pipe exports in volume terms. The Netherlands accounted for 45.1% of exports, followed by the United Kingdom at 20.6%, and Germany at 18.3%. Together, these three countries represented 84.1% of total export flows.
