Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the almond market volume in SADC remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 3 859 t and 3 881 t. Domestic production held steady at around 1 045–1 055 t per year, while imports and exports varied, reflecting consistent underlying demand.

In 2022, market volume rose to 4 081 t. This increase coincided with the launch of the locally grown 'Al Monde' almond brand by Cape Almonds, which introduced 50 t of South African almonds to national fresh produce markets. Concurrently, severe drought conditions in California, a major global almond producer, likely boosted demand for almonds from other regions, supporting higher import levels into SADC. Agreements with over 50 Western Cape farmers expanded local cultivation, aligning with a consumer preference shift toward fresher, locally sourced products.

The market volume then fell sharply to 2 608 t in 2023, indicating a significant correction after the previous year's peak.
