The almond market in MENA began the period at 795.7 thousand tons in 2018, bolstered by rising consumer interest in healthy snacks and the diversification of almond-based products such as almond milk and flour. A contraction to 682.8 thousand tons followed in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic then shifted consumption habits, with increased demand for nutritious at-home snacks helping to push the market slightly upward to 696.8 thousand tons in 2020.

Market volume declined further to 655.1 thousand tons in 2021. In 2022, it stabilized at 644.7 thousand tons amid global supply-chain disruptions and the commissioning of new almond processing plants in major producing countries. A vigorous rebound occurred in 2023, with the market expanding to 762.9 thousand tons on the back of stronger domestic output and sustained import levels.

In 2020, MENA produced 591.6 thousand tons of almonds, representing a 1.1% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 14.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 4.6%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 629.9 thousand tons. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 7.1%, while the largest increase was observed in 2018, at 21.8%.

Exports almonds from MENA

In 2020, almond exports from MENA totaled 19.0 thousand tons, down 6.0% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 54.4%, corresponding to an average annual decline of 23.1%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 13.9 thousand tons. The most substantial decline took place in 2018, with a 66.6% drop, while the largest increase occurred in 2019, at 45.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Afghanistan (8.4% of exports in kind), Pakistan (7.8%), and India (6.8%) formed the largest group of buyers for MENA's almonds. However, their combined share was limited to 23.0% of total exports in kind, indicating a diversified country structure.

In 2020, cross-border shipments of almonds from MENA amounted to 282.8 million US dollars, a 9.7% decrease from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 3.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.3%. The partner structure for exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 remained fragmented. India (9.1% of exports in value terms), Afghanistan (7.5%), and Pakistan (6.7%) together accounted for only 23.4% of total flows, with no single country holding a dominant share.

Volatility characterized the market behavior during these years. Imports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, showing a 1.8-fold variation between these years. In 2020, cross-border shipments of almonds to MENA came to 124.1 thousand tons, reflecting a modest increase of 5.6% from the previous year.
