To implement this, STO opened a new wholesale center in Malé, which improved distribution and market access, aiming to stabilize supply and prices for consumers.

The state-led import framework continued into 2024, reinforcing STO's central role in regulating the supply of staple vegetables without major new private sector entry or changes to local production facilities.

After two consecutive years of decline, alliaceous vegetable production in the Maldives rebounded in 2020. That year, the country produced 38 880 kg, marking a modest 0.6% increase compared to 2019. Production had reached its lowest point in 2019 at 38 650 kg, following the largest annual decline of 1.6% in 2018.

The peak import volume was recorded in 2019 at 15 065 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 18.4%.
