Halal Miyazaki Wagyu Export Program Opens Premium Beef Channel to Indonesia

Miyazaki establishes halal export route

Miyazaki Prefecture is opening a new channel for premium Japanese beef in Indonesia after securing the halal certification and documentation required to export Miyazaki Wagyu. Metro TV News reported that the program was formally presented in Jakarta, with Miyazaki Vice Governor Toshiro Hinokuma attending the launch of Halal Miyazaki Wagyu.

According to Hinokuma, the prefecture had obtained all necessary certificates and documents by February 2026. The initiative was marked by a formal reception in Jakarta on 4 August 2026, attended by representatives of Indonesia’s food industry and business community. The event was supported by PT Indosps Bogatama Sukses and provided a venue for discussing future commercial cooperation.

Dedicated processing supports market access

Preparations included the development of a dedicated processing facility in Saito City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Hinokuma said the plant uses manual slaughter performed by workers instead of the machine-based method normally employed, allowing production to meet strict halal requirements. The prefectural government acknowledged that the new procedure required substantial adjustments from the local industry.

The program is designed to preserve both the quality associated with Miyazaki beef and compliance with halal rules. That combination is essential for access to Indonesia, whose large Muslim population makes certification a central commercial requirement rather than a secondary product feature. Miyazaki also views Indonesia as a strategic base from which it can learn how to serve other Muslim-majority markets.

Hotels and restaurants lead the rollout

The initial route to market is focused on professional kitchens at prominent hotels and on restaurant partnerships already operating in Jakarta. These outlets will introduce the product before distribution expands more broadly inside Indonesia. The Japanese delegation is also seeking long-term partnerships with Indonesian companies and intends to work directly with local retail-sector businesses.

No shipment volume, sales target, price, participating restaurant list or timetable for broader retail availability was disclosed. The absence of these figures means the launch should initially be viewed as a controlled premium-market entry rather than evidence of a large new beef trade flow. Hotels and restaurants offer a practical test channel because they can present high-value Wagyu to selected customers while importers assess demand, handling requirements and repeat orders.

Indonesia could provide a model for other markets

The prefecture considers the agreement part of Japan’s wider international food-trade strategy. Hinokuma said Miyazaki Wagyu exports to many Islamic countries still face obstacles and expressed hope that consumers in those markets would eventually be able to access the beef. A successful Indonesian rollout could demonstrate that Miyazaki’s processing and certification system works under strict halal conditions.

For Indonesian importers and food-service operators, the program adds a differentiated Japanese product to the premium beef segment. For Miyazaki producers and processors, its importance lies in establishing a compliant supply chain and durable local partnerships. The commercial scale will become clearer only when shipment volumes, buyer numbers and the pace of expansion beyond Jakarta’s hospitality sector are reported.
