Export markets drive the shift from glass

Wine producers focused on international sales are investing in aluminium cans as logistics costs and changing consumption habits challenge the dominance of glass. AgroalimentareNews reports that canned wine has developed into a business worth millions of dollars in mass retail across North America, the United Kingdom and Northern Europe. Italy’s domestic market remains strongly attached to the traditional bottle, but export-oriented wineries are treating cans as a practical format for markets where portability, portion control and environmental performance influence purchasing decisions.

The commercial case rests partly on the difference in packaging weight. An empty aluminium can weighs about 13 grams, compared with 400-700 grams for a standard 750 ml glass bottle. According to AgroalimentareNews, using canned wine for transoceanic exports can reduce total packaging weight by 40%. That allows suppliers to move more wine within a given shipping volume and lowers the fuel required in maritime and road transport. The format may therefore affect freight economics as well as the environmental indicators requested by large retail groups.

Linings and nitrogen protect product quality

Moving wine into metal requires more than replacing one container with another. Wine contains tartaric, malic and citric acids, while sulphur dioxide may also react with bare aluminium. Such contact can change the wine’s colour and produce hydrogen sulphide, associated with a rotten-egg odour. Modern cans address this risk with an internal layer of BPA-free polymer lacquer. The hydrophobic barrier prevents direct contact between the liquid and the metal, helping to preserve the wine’s pH, aromas and varietal characteristics.

Oxygen management is the other critical step. Immediately before sealing, filling lines introduce a micro-drop of liquid nitrogen. It evaporates rapidly, displaces oxygen from the headspace and creates slight internal pressure. This limits premature oxidation during storage, including exposure to high temperatures in August. The pressure also increases the structural rigidity of the can, helping it withstand logistics loads. Aluminium blocks light from fluorescent lamps and the sun, protecting fresh white wines, sparkling wines and rosés against light-strike defects in demanding storage and service conditions.

Recycling and new sales channels

Aluminium can be recycled repeatedly, and recycling it requires 95% less energy than producing primary metal, according to AgroalimentareNews. These characteristics are especially relevant in Sweden, Norway and Finland, where state alcohol monopolies apply progressive environmental taxation linked to packaging impact. For wineries and packaging suppliers, compliance with such criteria can influence product selection and market access. The calculations must still account for the can, its polymer lining, filling technology and the recycling systems operating in each destination.

Demand is also connected to how and where wine is consumed. Younger buyers abroad are showing interest in single-serving 200 ml and 250 ml formats that are portable and require neither a corkscrew nor a glass. Cans are gaining ground in travel retail, including airlines, high-speed trains and cruise ships, as well as music festivals and sports arenas where glass is prohibited for safety reasons. These channels favour lighter, compact packaging and predictable serving sizes. The opportunity is strongest for wineries able to combine stable filling processes with products suited to immediate consumption, while can manufacturers and coating suppliers gain a larger role in preserving quality across international distribution.
