Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for yoghurt in the Netherlands fell from 228 thousand tons in 2018 to 120 thousand tons in 2023. This downward trend was interrupted only by a minor increase in 2020, before accelerating sharply in 2022.

By 2023, regulatory changes such as the school dairy scheme restricted subsidized products to plain, semi-skimmed yoghurt without added sugars or flavors. Consumer demand simultaneously moved towards plain full-fat yoghurt and functional products with added protein. In 2024, further adjustments to the consumption tax exemption for dairy drinks and reports of industry overcapacity and plant closures indicated ongoing structural shifts in the market.
