Yam production in Africa started strong in 2018 at over 76 million tons, supported by Ghana's rising exports as the world's leading yam exporter. The market stabilized slightly in 2019, then resumed growth in 2020 as Ghana's export momentum continued to drive production volumes.

Growth accelerated in 2021 with the release of five high-yielding yam varieties in Ghana, boosting yields and output. In 2022, shifting consumer preferences in urban areas, where yam became a luxury food item, further sustained demand. By 2023, production reached over 87 million tons, reflecting steady expansion across the period.

In 2020, Africa produced 79 089 thousand tonnes of yams, marking a moderate 5.1% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 12.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.9%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 1.4%. In contrast, 2018 saw the biggest increase, with production rising by 8.4%.
