The market for wooden railway sleepers in Finland expanded steadily from 2018 to 2021, with market volume growing from 22 911 m³ to 27 387 m³. This increase was supported by both domestic production, which peaked at 16 200 m³ in 2020, and rising imports, which reached 11 887 m³ in 2021.

A sharp contraction occurred in 2022, when the market volume more than halved to 13 485 m³ and declined further to 12 220 m³ in 2023. Production fell drastically from 15 500 m³ in 2021 to 6 230 m³ in 2022, while imports also dropped significantly during this period.

In 2024, the market recovered by 8.6% to 13 267 m³, alongside a 4.7% rise in market value. This turnaround coincided with a heated wood trade in Finland, where purchases of industrial wood grew by 18% and strong demand from the chemical forest industry stimulated logging and timber commerce. Exceptionally high prices for all wood grades, particularly fiber and energy wood, further influenced market conditions.
